How Long Is CDL Training?

This is one of the most common CDL training questions we are asked. Each state is responsible for regulating the requirements in order to obtain a Class A CDL. Some states set specific guidelines for how long training should last and how many hours of classroom and on the road instruction should be included in the CDL training curriculum. Other states do not set such guidelines and allow the truck driver training schools themselves determine the appropriate length of training.

This is where you want to be careful in selecting a CDL training school. Any school that tells you they can get you on the road and driving in a week or less is a not being truthful with you, and does not have any relationships with the Motor Carriers who regularly hire new Student Drivers. Truck drivers who graduate from these types of truck driver training schools are often a danger to both themselves and to the other drivers on the road.
