Private Schools, Community Colleges & Companies with CDL Training
There are several ways to go about completing your CDL training. The most popular avenues include company-sponsored CDL training programs, private CDL training schools, and community colleges.
Private CDL Training Schools
Private CDL training schools are for-profit entities that do nothing but train drivers for the road. Private school is typically the most expensive route, but may also be the quickest route to a Class A license. In addition, students have the freedom to work for any company of their choice after graduating. Training may be state regulated but that doesn’t mean it’s certified or accredited.
Community Colleges that Offer CDL Training
More and more, there are community colleges that offer CDL training as a full-time curriculum. Training at community colleges is typically much cheaper, and students are free to go to whatever company they want after training. Some schools also offer flexible programs, with night and weekend classes. While you aren’t guaranteed a job after graduating, the school typically brings in trucking recruiters and offers job placement assistance.
If you can’t pay or get financing at a private trucking school or community college, company sponsored CDL training can be a great option. A company sponsors/pays for your training to get your CDL and guarantees you a job at the end of your training. In return, these programs require you to sign a contract requiring you to still with a particular company for one to two years after you complete your training. Some sponsored programs may require you to pay back your training expenses out of your paychecks. For the programs that are completely free of charge, you must fulfill your contract, or you will become responsible for paying back your training expenses.
When it comes to choosing a school, the decision comes down to money and personal preference. If you have the money to pay for your training expenses, many recommend this route, so you can avoid being tied down to a contract after you receive your training. If you don’t have the funds, however, company sponsored programs can be a great option to take advantage of.
